RCM methodology

Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) is a systematic approach to developing maintenance strategies for critical systems. Originating in the aviation industry, RCM has become the global standard for professional maintenance management. The methodology focuses on maintaining system function rather than just equipment, helping organizations optimize availability while managing risks and costs effectively.

RCM is all about creating maintenance concepts for critical systems. It originated in the aviation industry and since 1982 has become a global industrial heritage for those carrying out maintenance at a professional level by managing:

  • Availability
  • Reliability
  • Risks
  • Costs

RCM and SAE JA1011 Standard

The international definitions and the structure are standardized worldwide, since 1999. It ensures that all maintenance and related professionals understand each other by using the same definitions. Companies use RCM as the minimum knowledge for maintenance and production people.

RCM is a new way of thinking, for many of you. It is not new, but many do not know it well enough. Understanding how important the cooperation between different departments (sales, production and engineering), is valuable for many. RCM improves your skills as a maintenance engineer.

Landscape with industries in the background

After your RCM training you can develop/optimize maintenance concepts based on a aviation-proven standard. The world is changing, so will a maintenance concept. A maintenance concept is not finished until you have nest it into a maintenance plan, to keep your maintenance program in (SAP) PM, Maximo, Ultimo, CDM up to date… and keep it up to date.

Maintenance is never finished, for the simple reason that failures are not static, but dynamic. Maintenance plans from suppliers cannot be implemented without adapting them to the unique situation and requirements at your site. Let’s start a training with all parties (supplier, end-user) involved!

Do you know how many malfunctions are caused by human error? Based on years of research, there is statistical data about these errors and I want to share this with you in our training sessions.

Currently a vast part of maintenance is done in a preventive manner. According to research only 11% of all malfunctions can be preventive maintained. You have to organize the other 89% in a different manner. In our training we will discuss the possibilities.

Implementing Reliability Centered Maintenance

A senior maintenance engineer knows that an asset management system is something different than failure management, or even failure analysis. I believe that we can improve your maintenance efficiency by focusing on failures (and not on assets) by involving people, procedures, and machines. As a result, you can reduce costs and risks more quickly through RCM knowledge.

Based on the need of your organisation, I can offer you several kind of training. The training is developed in such a manner that they an impact for the way-of-working for operators, proces-, maintenance-, and reliability-engineers. Werther you are a consultant or a team-leader, you can join our training and start implementing RCM!
